General English

We provide expert training in general English at all levels, from beginner to advanced, on a one-to-one basis or in groups.

For one-to-one courses, we tailor the training to suit the requirements and interests of each client. This means it moves at your speed, uses examples and materials of interest and relevance to you, and can focus more on speaking/listening or on writing/reading, depending what you want.

We will teach you the grammar you need to make English work for you and the functional language of everyday life - for example: shopping, travelling, socialising, dealing with problems, telephoning. We can also include any aspects of business English that would be useful to you.

While we believe that grammar is important, the emphasis is always on communication and confidence-building.

Lessons may take place at our school or at your workplace if it is difficult for you to come to us. We recommend that you come to us if it is at all possible because you will be away from all the distractions of work.

Your course may be intensive or longer-term, or a mixture. The timetable is flexible and we design the course to give you the maximum benefit in the most efficient way. If you have just moved to England and speak little English, it would probably be useful for you to begin with an intensive or semi-intensive programme, to get you started. After that, you can cut back to two lessons a week for a while and then just one, to keep you on track.

An intensive programme is 6 hours of lessons per day for a week. A semi-intensive programme is 3 hours of lessons in either the morning or the afternoon, for a week or two. If you are in a position to choose, we recommend the semi-intensive programme because it gives you more time to assimilate what you are learning.

The most important thing is: please enrol as soon as you can! If you learn English properly from the beginning, you will speak much more accurately and your life in England will be much easier. Don't make the mistake of wanting to settle in first. If you pick up bad habits, they are difficult to break and if you are struggling to live and work in English, some lessons will help you a great deal.

Business English

We provide expert training in business English, on a one-to-one basis or in groups.

The course is tailor-made to meet your specific requirements. You tell us what your job involves and which areas you would like to explore and practise, and we design the course accordingly. Where relevant, we will also discuss and advise you on the cultural aspects of situations.

For example, you may want to work towards being able to do the following in English without fear of linguistic or cultural misunderstandings:

  • make clear and successful presentations
  • speak and understand on the telephone
  • attend - or chair - meetings
  • negotiate with colleagues, suppliers or clients
  • interview a candidate or be interviewed yourself
  • write business letters, e-mails and reports
  • socialise with colleagues or clients.

We create materials and roleplays especially for you (and anything you tell us about your company is treated in the strictest confidence).

Before you start learning business language, we assume you will already have at least an intermediate knowledge of general English but we can include in a business English course any elements of grammar that you particularly need or that are causing you problems.

Lessons may take place at our school or at your workplace if it is difficult for you to come to us. We recommend that you come to us if it is at all possible because you will be away from all the distractions of work.

The timetable is flexible. Usually, it is more useful for you to take two or three lessons a week for a few months than to try to learn business English intensively. However if you have a big event, such as a conference, coming up and need a lot of help with it in a short time, we will be very happy to work intensively with you and make sure you are well prepared.

Group English Courses

If your company has a number of foreign employees needing to learn English, we can teach them in a group or groups, either at your workplace or at our school.

This works well for business English, which is fairly modular and each session stands alone, to a sufficient extent.

However, over the years we have found that general English group courses are not as successful as one-to-one training. There are two main reasons for this. Firstly, even in a small group, there is invariably someone who missed the previous lesson and then either flounders or holds the others back. Secondly, if the students are from the same country, despite everyone's best intentions, they speak to each other in their own language during the lessons. It is far more beneficial for each person to have full immersion in English for the whole of the session. In our experience, 40 lessons one-to-one are worth 100 lessons in a group.

If your work situation dictates that a group course is the only possibility, this is obviously much better than nothing. We will give each person as much individual attention as possible and, as long as the students are motivated, they will learn - just not as quickly as they would one-to-one.

Please contact us to discuss your requirements and circumstances and together we can work out the most efficient way to get your employees speaking English. We (JMJ) will assess each person's level of English and then discuss with you how to arrange the groups and set the timetable so as to cause minimum disruption to your business.
