Sightseeing
by Rattawut Lapcharoensap

These short stories reveal a great deal about the effect of Westernisation on Thailand and the Thais' attitudes to it. They also explore relationships and the day-to-day struggles of life in the Land of Smiles. Rather obvious metaphors sometimes but some beautiful descriptions too. Well worth reading.

The King Never Smiles: A Biography of Thailand's Bhumibol Adulyadej
by Paul M. Handley

A new biography of the King of Thailand, by an American journalist. Controversial amongst Thais because it assesses the monarch as a man and considers his flaws, this book sheds a lot of light on the country's recent history.

The Beach
by Alex Garland

A young man from London goes backpacking in Thailand and meets an odd character in a Bangkok hotel who tells him about an idyllic secret beach and leaves him a map…

I really enjoyed the story and also the images the book conjured up for me of a hot, exciting, staggeringly beautiful country. A great novel (although you might not imagine so if you have seen the film).

Bangkok 8
by John Burdett

This is an exciting story, well plotted and suspenseful, set in Bangkok. Not only is it one of the best crime novels I have ever read, I also learnt a lot about Thai culture from reading this.

Kingdom of Make-Believe
by Dean Barrett

A man from New York who was in Thailand during the Vietnam War returns to the "kingdom of make-believe" and lays his past to rest.

I love thrillers that are set in exotic locations and I certainly enjoyed this!
