by Bernhard Schlink A
powerful book that explores huge issues. A fifteen-year-old
boy falls in love and gets into a relationship with
a much older woman, who is subsequently tried for war
crimes. This is Schlink attempting, along with the rest
of his nation, to make sense of and come to terms with
the Holocaust.

thought-provoking book, looking at the events of World
War II through the eyes of a mad dwarf. It may sound

by Patrick Süskind A horror
story set in eighteenth century France, by a German
writer much acclaimed in his own country as well as
abroad. The protagonist has an unhappy childhood because
he "doesn't smell right" and grows up to murder
a lot of girls for their personal scent. (Just been
made into a film.)
